American poet who succeeded in making the ordinary appear extraordinary through the clarity and discreteness of his imagery. Williams, trained as a pediatrician, devoted himself to a lifetime of poetry writing and medical practice in his hometown. In Al Que Quiere! (1917), roughly translated "To Him Who Wants It," his style is distinctly his own. Characteristic poems that express Williams' fresh, direct impression of the sensuous world are the frequently anthologized "Lighthearted William" and "By the Road to the Contagious Hospital" and "The Red Wheelbarrow," both of the latter published in Spring and All (1923). - Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature
