British actress and author whose American husband, Pierce Butler, inherited plantations and several hundred slaves after their marriage. She was appalled by slavery and disagreements about it contributed to the couple's eventual divorce in 1849. Her experience provided the material for her 1863 book Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839. She also published plays, poetry, and translations of other authors, and was the grandmother of novelist Owen Wister.
