Newbery Award-winning children's book author who earlier in his career wrote mysteries and screenplays. As a youth he taught himself sleight of hand and when he was 19 he compiled a handbook of magic tricks. His son Paul also won the Newbery Award (for Joyful Noise) - thus far they are the only father and son to both win the award.
