French novelist, essayist, and playwright who addressed the isolation of the individual in an alien universe, the estrangement of the individual from himself, the problem of evil, and the inescapable finality of death, refelcting the anomie of the postwar intellectual. He received the 1957 Nobel Prize for Literature.
