Former advertising executive who began writing fiction in the early 1970s, including crime novels, supernatural horror tales, and espionage thrillers. Among his works are his first book, The Dead of Winter, about three unexceptional men who avenge the murder of their friend; The Ross Forgery, a bibliomystery related to the real-life Thomas Wise forgeries, and his Edgar-winning Catch Me, Kill Me, about a kidnapped Russian poet who had defected to the United States.
