A history of churches in New York City that includes a chapter on the "The Negro Plot" or New York Conspiracy of 1741, which began with after a series of fires sparked belief that a conspiracy was afoot among the enslaved and poor Whites to take control of the island. The subsequent panic led to the execution of 34 people, including 30 Black men.
