Deep Down in the Jungle… : Negro Narrative Folklore from the Streets of Philadelphia

Hatboro, Pennsylvania: Folklore Associates, 1964.

Price: $100.00

Hardcover. First edition. Octavo. 287pp. Yellow lettering on the spine a bit dulled, else fine in about very good rubbed dust jacket with interior tape to the upper folds, shallow chipping at the spine ends, and scattered perimeter nicks, creases and small tears. A controversial book of dubious scholarly work, that begins with the writer explaining: "The area in which the folklore presented here was collected is one small four-block marginal neighborhood just south of central Philadelphia," though he admits most of it was gathered "in the living room of my house," but still claims "I am certain that this collection is representative of the lore of all lower-class Negro culture in Philadelphia." Elements of the narratives were considered "obscene" and the book was distributed strictly to scholars and sociologists.
