Unbound. Nine partially printed parchment documents, each completed in ink. Eight documents are approximately 16" x 10", the ninth is a bit smaller. Affixed paper seal. Old neat folds on each, mostly near fine. Each document is authentically signed by Martin Van Buren, Jr. in his own hand, as well as signed by him for his father, President Martin Van Buren. Van Buren, Jr. acted as secretary to his father and in 1839 was appointed Secretary of the General Land Office. Each document is dated in 1839 and each awards land in varying locations (some of the properties are listed only by lot and plat numbers and are difficult to pinpoint without further resources and inclination) in Illinois to Frederic Bronson. Frederic Brunson lived in New York City and Connecticut, and was a banker, businessman, land speculator, money-lender, and promoter of westward expansion. With his father, Isaac Bronson, and own son, also named Frederic, he opened a bank in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Attractive documents demonstrating the speculation encouraged by western expansion.
