(stamped on the rear turn-in), spine with five raised bands, turn-ins ruled in gilt, watered silk endleaves. Binding rubbed at the joints and edges, spine toned with modest scuffing, 1" split to the upper joint at the spine base (but sound), watered silk flyleaves with a tiny bit of fraying and loss at the top and bottom edges, a very good copy, lacking the slipcase. Inscribed (in a secretarial hand) on the limitation page: "To R. Randolf Hicks with my compliments" and Signed by John Markle. (Hicks was a noted New York City lawyer from a prominent Virginia family.) Copy 116 of 300 copies published, printed by the Kalkhoff Company on Whitchurch handmade paper. Biography of the wealthy coal executive, inventor, and philanthropist.
