A study of the chemical phenylmercuric acetate for use as a spermicidal contraceptive, that begins with a discussion of the British brand Volpar. (The chemistry was not suitable for most American climates, so a new jelly was formulated.) The authors are hopeful for the possibility of use as a contraceptive; phenylmercuric acetate is now considered a hazardous substance. Reprinted from *Human Fertility*, Volume 9, Number 2, June 1944.
