Two programs for the D.W. Griffith film, *The Birth of a Nation*, based on the Thomas Dixon novel *The Clansman*, which helped popularize the Lost Cause propaganda campaign that portrayed the South States as victim of Northern aggression and the Ku Klux Klan as tragic heroes. The film's popularity helped contributed to a resurgence in the hate group during the early part of the 20th Century. While a landmark film, due to its epic scale, sweeping battle recreation, and technical achievements, it was a controversial film upon its release and remains so today.
