Michael Balint's preface gives a history of the translation of the book: first published in Hungarian in 1931, it was translated into German in 1932, French in 1937, and Spanish in 1939. The difficulties in, among other things, "expressing in English experiences and sentiments of Continental nurseries"—and the author's sudden death at the beginning of WWII—necessitated a longer wait for the English text. The text was eventually translated by their son, John A. Balint and his wife, and extensively revised by Nancy Proctor-Gregg; James Strachey translated chapter four. A very nice copy.
