Clark on the title page: "To Mr. Clark from Winchell Smith." Barrett H. Clark was an exceptionally important figure in modern American drama. Aside from authoring many books, he served as the longtime literary editor for the drama publisher Samuel French. *The Fortune Hunter* was adapted by Smith from his own co-written novel. Winchell Smith was a highly successful playwright and many of his plays were made into films including two directed by John Ford (*Lightnin'* and *Thank You*), as well as *The Saphead* featuring Buster Keaton (which Smith co-directed).
