Belmont, Massachusetts: Friends of Nature, 1961.
Price: $350.00
Softcover. First edition. Slim octavo. 17pp. Light wear, wrappers toned at the spine with a bit of soil, very good. From the library of the artists Ben Shahn and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with erasable penciled bracketing throughout, three tiny inked checkmarks on one page, and the name and address of a nursery penciled on the lower wrap. Laid in, as it came to us, is a mimeographed ad for horticultural earthworms—$5.50 per 1,000, postpaid.
Published in the same year as Hunter's now-classic *The Natural Foods Cookbook*, "heralded as the nation’s first healthful natural foods cookbook" (*The New York Times*). In 1964, Hunter would greatly expand on the topic presented here (apparently first an address at Horticultural Hall, Boston) in a 300+ page book of the same name, published by Houghton Mifflin. Also laid in is a Shahn estate label designed by the artists' son, Jonathan. An early pamphlet by a pioneering American food writer, with an interesting association. Very uncommon.
