Unbound. Vintage gelatin silver photograph. Approximately 6¾" x 5". Fine. Warren is shown standing outdoors between Frances Cheney and Flannery O'Connor, who are both seated. Photo is undated but likely from the early 1960s. Provenance from the Cheney estate, it seems likely that Brainard Chaney was behind the camera. Southern Agrarian author Brainard Cheney and his wife, the librarian Frances Cheney became close friends with O'Connor when she sought out Brainard after he had published a thoughtful and insightful review of her first book, *Wise Blood* in 1952. O'Connor spent the rest of her life living with her mother a fter she was diagnosed with lupus in 1952. The Cheneys and O'Connors remained close friends until Flannery O'Connnor's death in 1964. [With] a retained carbon copy of a September 24, 1964 letter from Thomas Stritch to Robert Fitzgerald recommending that Frances Cheney write O'Connor's Bibliography. Frances and the publishers Robert Giroux and Roger Straus are all copied on the letter. The typed and unsigned letter is folded as mailed to Frances Cheney, else fine. In the letter Stritch mentions their mutual friends Andrew Lytle and the Tates (Allan Tate and Caroline Gordon). O'Connor had passed away just six weeks before this letter was written. For the two pieces.
