The Holy Bible, Containing The Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of The Original Tongues: And With the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised: With References and Various Readings

Baltimore: Joseph N. Lewis, [circa 1830s - 1840s].

Price: $1,500.00

Hardcover. Thick quarto. [iv], 787, 277, 139, 281-600. Illustrated with engraved plates. Contemporary binding with tan leather boards decoratively stamped in gilt with an ornate boarder stamped in dark brown, spine decoratively stamped in gilt creating four compartments each with a gilt device save for the second from the top which has "Holy Bible" stamped in gilt, gilt along the edges of the boards, gilt turn-ins, and marbled endpapers. An index card with a name and address is taped to the front free endpaper, we think it says, "Mrs. John Q. Symons 204 So. First St. Dunder." Boards and spine rubbed and worn with an abrasion to the leather on the rear board, some loss to the gilt along the board edges, gilt on page edges dulled, and scattered foxing throughout, still very good.

Contains the family records of William Pollock (born in Erie County, Pennsylvania) and Sarah Maison (born "near Mt. Airie College," which we think means a college near Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, as there is no “Mt. Airie College”). They were married May 3, 1832 and according to the birth records listed William and Sarah appear to have moved from Philadelphia to Beardstown, Illinois between 1835 and 1837. Sarah's death is recorded to have occurred April 1, 1878, a note states that she passed away, "after a most painful illness of four months, displaying through these months of great suffering a beautiful Christian patience, faith, and resignation (disease: gangrene)."

Laid in are a number of interesting pieces of ephemera: A beautifully crafted needlepoint bookmark that reads “Hope”; a cutout silhouette of a woman with a signature that looks like “M. Wood”; a black and white photograph an older looking man holding two children, we believe the caption reads, "Uncle Peter – Edith and Margaretta" (possibly 1890s or early 1900s); a ticket for the Whiteside County Agricultural Society, Second Day, October 15th, which we were able to determine took place in Morrison, Illinois; and a clipping of the obituary for Margaret Pollock Rice from May 1, 1975.

A well-loved 19th century family Bible with a storied history told through family records and materials.
