The Cottage Bible and Family Expositor: Containing The Old and New Testaments, with Practical Expositions and Explanatory Notes in Two Volumes

Hartford: Case, Tiffany and Company, 1853.

Price: $350.00

Softcover. Two volumes. Notes by Thomas Williams. Edited by Rev. William Patton. Volume One: 736pp., Volume Two: [2], 737-1440pp. Illustrated with engraved plates. Quarter black leather lined in gilt over brown cloth boards, raised bands along the spines making four compartments on each volume with gilt tooling and "Cottage Bible" and the volume number stamped in gilt, each with three devices stamped in blind along the spine, and marbled endpapers. Owner name of Earl R. Buchanan on the first front flyleaf of each volume, and volume two has a piece of stationary from D.M. Camp & Co. of Newport, Vermont tipped onto the second front flyleaf. Both volumes with wear to the boards and spines, both with scattered foxing throughout, and Volume Two with a small tear along the gutter of the front free endpaper, overall very good. Includes family records for the Buchanan family listing marriages, births, and deaths with the list of births ranging from 1817 to 1931.

What at first glance appears to be a receipt for the Bible from D.M. Camp & Co. might actually be a note from the shop to the bindery they sent it away to on Buchanan's behalf. The handwritten portion reads, "To. L.W. Hildreth, 2 vols. Cottage Bible, plain substantial bind don't put on his name."
