First novel (published simultaneously with a collection of short stories) by Foote, whose subsequent works inspired many films and who went on to win two Best Screenplay Oscars himself (*To Kill a Mockingbird* and *Tender Mercies*). Lillian Hellman wrote the screenplay for the 1966 Arthur Penn-directed film version featuring Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, E.G. Marshall, Angie Dickinson, and Robert Duvall.
