Dick's Original Album Verses and Acrostics

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers, 1879.

Price: $45.00

Hardcover. 12mo. Burgundy cloth boards decoratively stamped in black and gilt on the front board, gilt along the spine, and stamped in blind on the rear board. Publisher's catalog in the back and eight pages of ads (including on the pastedowns) with black and white illustrations. Front pastedown and front flyleaf with some soiling, boards and spine somewhat worn and bumped, still very good. Contains original verses plus a collection of two hundred and eighteen ladies' Christian names with their derivation and meaning and an original acrostic with each name. The ads are as entertaining as the book itself. One is for the book, *What Shall We Do To-Night? or, Social Amusements for Evening Parties* and has an illustration of two men in a giraffe costume. Another is for a book called *The Art and Etiquette of Making Love: A Manual of Love Courtship and Matrimony* and is curiously accompanied by an illustration of two children playing leapfrog; it claims that the book will tell you "How to cure bashfulness, how to write a love letter, how to accept or reject a proposal, and more. A charming little volume.
