The King and I: Based on the Novel "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Landon

New York: Random House, (1951).

Price: $250.00

Hardcover. First edition. A clean very good or better copy with a little sunning on the spine, lacking the dust jacket. This Rodgers and Hammerstein version is the basis for the 1956 Walter Lang-directed film featuring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner (reprising the stage role that made him famous and winning an Oscar). A very scarce play. Small initials of Barrett H. Clark, dated in 1951 on front pastedown. Barrett H. Clark was an exceptionally important figure in modern American drama: aside from authoring and translating many plays, he served as the longtime literary editor for the drama publisher Samuel French, as well as director of the Drama League of America. He helped guide playwrights, such as Eugene O’Neill and Maxwell Anderson, and encouraged American dramatists to tell real stories of working-class people, using language derived from everyday life.
