Spine lettering a little tarnished but easily readable, a near fine copy of a cheaply produced book. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "To my dear friends Mr & Mrs Clarence Williams, my long-time, very dear friends from the author John P. Green. Cleveland, Ohio. Oct. 30th, 1920."
John Paterson Green was an African-American lawyer, businessman, and politician who lived most of his life in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the first African-American elected to office in Cleveland, first African-American elected to the Ohio state Senate, and is known as "The Father of Labor Day": he introduced the bill that established Labor Day as an Ohio state holiday, and the U.S. Congress made it a national holiday in 1894. He also authored *Essays on Miscellaneous Subjects* (published anonymously, 1866) and *Recollections of the Inhabitants, Localities, Superstitions, and Kuklux Outrages of the Carolinas* (1880). *Brignano* 145; not in *Catalogue of the Blockson Collection* or *Work*.
