Unbound. Wood engraving. Essay by Norman Kent. Engraving by De Pol measures approximately 4" x 5¾" on a 6½" by 8½" sheet. Housed in a paper portfolio made of a large sheet folded twice to make four pages, measuring 13" x 16" closed. (The essay is printed on p.[2] and the woodcut is visible through a die-cut window on p.[3].) The image is fine, but the sheet was once adhered with two pieces of tape and yellowed tape shadows remain, affecting the margins; it is currently adhered with a small piece of clear tape in the bottom margin, which looks to us like Scotch tape. Outer pages of the portfolio a bit foxed with light tape shadows visible on p.[4], overall very good. Signed and titled by De Pol beneath the image, and additional Inscribed by him, in ink, beneath the printed essay: "For Frank (Petrocelli) who pushed this through for me — With thanks John (De Pol) 4.9.53." Petrocelli was a contemporary of De Pol's and proprietor of the Press of the Iron Horse.
