Columbus or Burlington, New Jersey: Rebecca F. Bishop and Elizabeth Mathis, [circa 1880s?].
Price: $150.00
Unbound. Handbill. Measuring approximately 5" x 7", printed recto only on thin paper. Old folds and a few tiny chips and tears, very good. An intriguing handbill advertising a new way to preserve food and drink of nearly any kind cheaply and so simply it "Can be done by a child 10 years of age." We haven't been able to find any information about Dr. E. H. Shourd, but the two women selling township and family rights (Mrs. Rebecca F. Bishop and Mrs. Elizabeth Mathis) lived about eight miles from each other, in Columbus and Burlington, New Jersey, respectively. Four women listed as references were from Burlington (one) and nearby Rancocas, New Jersey (three). We find one mention of Shourd being an old family name in nearby Manahawkin, New Jersey (about 50 miles from Burlington). An early handbill making a bold claim, worthy of additional research.
