Price: $400.00
Softcover. 16mo. 360pp. Full black morocco, both boards decoratively stamped in gilt with an elaborate design featuring a cross at the center, gilt decoration along the spine making six compartments, each repeating a gilt device save for the second from the top which has "Gospel Liturgy" stamped in gilt, gilt decoration along the edges of the boards, gilt turn-ins, all page edges gilt, and custard-yellow endpapers. Owner inscription on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. L. Van Buskirk. Preble. April 17, 1860. Presented by, and with the regards of Mr. & Mrs. W.E. Manley," with another inscription on the rear pastedown, "Loaned by Elizabeth Goodwin." Boards and spine worn, particularly at the corners, foxing and some soiling to the endgpapers and flyleaves, overall a very good or better copy with the gilt bright and the binding sound. The title page states, "Prepared by direction of The General Convention of Universalists." Preble was a town in Brown County, Wisconsin from 1859 to 1964 when it was absorbed by the city of Green Bay; meaning Mrs. Van Buskirk received this liturgy just one year after the town's establishment. A beautiful mid-nineteenth century binding with a unique connection to a lost town.
