Washington, D.C. Zenger, (1980).
Price: $2,000.00
Unbound. Preproduction material. Consisting of eight large original illustrations, five photographs reproduced from the National Archive, and additional material. A fine collection with the thick illustration board slightly and uniformly bowed; the illustrations have been beautifully preserved. The book was first published by Dodd, Mead in 1943. Zenger reissued the book, with Edward L. Cooper's illustrations as well as photographic plates, in 1980, in an edition of 1,000 copies. (Interestingly, enough time had passed that the squadrons involved in the book no longer needed to be designated by pseudonyms.) We haven't been able to find out much additional information about Edward L. Cooper, although he reportedly illustrated some Defense Intelligence Agency reports on new Soviet technology (submarines, lasers, space weapons) in the 1980s. A nice collection of prepublication material with striking monochrome illustrations. A list of material follows:
- Eight large original monochrome illustrations for this edition by Edward L. Cooper. Acrylic on illustration board with tissue overlays. Images measure approximately 9” x 13¼” on 10” x 16” illustration board.
- Five modern 8” x 10” silver gelatin prints the stamp of the National Archives verso. Each with a single production note inked verso and a tiny label taped on. With one smaller modern photographic reproduction taped onto a sheet of paper.
- 16 sheets relating to image captions, possibly camera-ready (sheets of 11” x 7” graph paper with production notes and captions taped on)
- Reproduction copy of the first edition (Dodd, Mead 1943). The pages have been neatly removed for photographing, and the preliminary leaves have been updated.
- A large printed sheet from Edward Brothers, Inc., who produced the book, giving publication information.
