Inscribed on the front fly by the author, in the year of publication. Daniel O. Hastings was an American lawyer and politician from Wilmington, Delaware. He served two terms as a U.S. Senator from Delaware. The book is inscribed to Ruly Carpenter, almost certainly Robert Ruliph Morgan Carpenter, Sr., a member of the board of directors of DuPont. In 1943, Robert "Ruly" Carpenter Sr. purchased the Philadelphia Phillies with his son, Robert Carpenter Jr., making his son the President. Carpenter Jr. would then be succeeded by his son, Robert "Ruly" III in 1972. Uncommon, *OCLC* locates just four holdings.
