Bronx, New York: Senior Class of DeWitt Clinton High School, 1941.
Price: $3,500.00
Hardcover. First edition. Quarto. 124, [4 ads] pp. Illustrated. Red cloth printed in black with armorial device. Cloth spine lacking (some of it present and laid in), corners rubbed and rounded a bit, hinges strengthened and a small chip on front fly, a good copy. The 1941 yearbook for DeWitt Clinton High School, depicting James Baldwin and the other members of his senior class. Baldwin is shown in his Senior picture on page 36, where it is revealed that his nickname was "Baldy" and where it is predicted that his future was as a "Novelist-Playright." He is also depicted in a group shot on page 30 of the Publications Committee, where he wrote for the high school literary magazine *The Magpie* (which was edited by his friend and classmate Richard Avedon). It is certainly possible that Baldwin appears in other group pictures, although the images are small enough to cast doubt on any definitive and easy confirmation. Very uncommon. *OCLC* maintains a record for a series of *The Clintonian* without specifying which issues are physically present. Additionally, we could locate no obvious auction or other sales records for this issue.
