A letter dated November 14, 1892 from Richmond, Indiana. In it a man identified only as Charles writes his cousin Gladie and discusses the recent presidential election between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. Charles is unhappy with the election results, the incumbent and fellow Indiana native Harrison lost his bid for reelection. He writes, “Some surprise parties are pleasant – and then again some are not. Tuesday was one of the “nots.” He tells two stories of locals’ reactions to the news of Harrison’s defeat. “A Christian lady here who had a never uttered a bad word in her life was in bed when her husband came home Tuesday night. She raised up in bed and asked him how the election bad gone. He said Harrison was beaten. She asked what caused it. He replied ‘Illinois.’ With a great deal of spirit she remarked as she laid back to cover herself up, ‘Damn Illinois!’” Later he writes, “Another pathetic case was my barber’s little boy…He said when he came home Tuesday night and told the family about I his little boy began to cry and they had a hard time to get him quiet that night. The child actually believed they would have to starve.”
An interesting letter documenting the public's thoughts on contentious election results.
