Between the Covers

Hardcover. A collection of three photo albums and associated loose photographs, a total of well over 500 mostly color snapshots and larger color prints dating from the 1970s-80s, compiled by two black women: presumably a mother and daughter of the family who were both originally from Saint Lucia and resided in Maryland near Washington, D.C. The collection also contains several black and white gelatin silver prints dating from the 1960s, together with several color photographs dating from the 1990s up through about 2003. The photographs are housed in three commercial self adhesive photo albums and five loose file folders. Both covers of one album are split along the edges, a few older snapshots have some dry stains at the edges only, one larger gelatin silver print is partly abraded and glue stained at one edge only, else most photographs are very good or better overall.

The collection includes a striking portrait of a young woman (the mother?) taken in the late 1960s by Saint Lucia photographer Charles St. Prix; and among the later photos there is an outstanding large color photograph of Nelson Mandela taken during his visit to St. Lucia in 1998. The bulk of the images in the collection document multiple generations of each woman’s African-American families, consisting of family members and friends out and about at home in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and also on the islands of Saint Lucia and Martinique.
