Between the Covers

Unbound. Ninth plate cased tintype. Image size approximately 2" x 2½". Matted with preserver in an embossed brown leather case, with decoratively cut yellow velvet pinch pad, and with a metal catch. No evidence of the identity of either the photographer or the subject. Tintype is very near fine, the case a bit rubbed and with the hinge renewed. Nice image of a handsome Black man in a particularly resplendent vest. The case and accouterments lead us to fix the date around 1865-70.
