Hardcover. First edition. Topedge with a bit of spotting, spine slightly tanned with ends lightly bumped, near fine, lacking the dust jacket. A semi-autobiographical novel, of a working-class family's struggles during the Reconstruction era, first in her Trexler family trilogy. Scarce in the trade. Herbst was a novelist and a political journalist. She reported firsthand of farmers' struggles in the U.S. during the Depression; of the rebellion against Batista in Cuba, of growing dissent and oppression under Hitler; of auto workers striking in Flint, Michigan; and of the civil war in Spain. However, her leftist leanings and resulting struggles through the McCarthy era have left her work relatively obscure to modern readers.
