[Playscript]: Gone With the Wind: The Epic Musical (Based on the Novel by Margaret Mitchell)

New York: Studio Duplicating Service / Joe Layton, Sept. 1, 1971.

Price: $9,500.00

Softcover. Stated Second Draft. Adaptation by Horton Foote. Music and lyrics by Harold Rome. Quarto. 107 leaves printed rectos only (Pp. 56; 51). Screw-bound in flexible green Studio Duplicating Service wrappers titled in gilt. Small neatly handwritten control number ("25") on the titlepage and at the bottom of the text block. A little rubbed, else very near fine. After a surprisingly successful Japanese musical version, Layton commissioned an English adaptation by Horton Foote, which appeared at London's West End in 1972. The production received mixed reviews but were encouraging enough for Layton to announce a Broadway opening in 1974. However, a revised version of the musical which played in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1973 received strong negative reviews, which caused Layton to cancel the Broadway opening. Rare. *OCLC* locates a single later copy of the script dated Nov. 29, 1971, also 107 leaves, which, like this version, includes the lyrics and dialogue but not the music (NYPL).
