[New Haven and Hartford Connecticut: 1968 and 2002].
Price: $350.00
Black & white photographic print (19” x 13”). One corner slightly cut, fine. A photographic collage juxtaposing two intimate images side-by-side: of the photographer’s deceased father in an open casket at Hartford in 2002; and of Duke Ellington at New Haven in 1968, standing next to his grand piano, smoking. The photographs were taken by the Connecticut photographer Joel Katz. A student of Walker Evans at the Yale School of Art, Katz won the Henry H. Strong Prize for American Literature in 1965 for his photographic essay of African-Americans in Mississippi taken during the Freedom Summer of 1964. He went on to have a prominent career as a photographer, graphic designer, and teacher, most recently at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and was the winner of the Rome Prize from the American Academy at Rome in 2002. Two beautifully composed images printed digitally from the original scanned negatives into one moving image of his father and Ellington.
