Songs of Four Decades

Athol, Mass: Published by W. Paul Cook. The Recluse Press, 1927.

Price: $2,000.00

Hardcover. First edition. Octavo. 160pp. Red cloth with printed paper labels. A bit of light nicking and wear on the spine label else near fine. A volume of strange and fantastical verse, awash in demons, mermaids, dragons, pirates, stillborn babies, dark caverns, death, Armageddon, "Red Harvests" (about bloody wars), et al. Published by the same press that issued *The Shunned House* by H.P. Lovecraft, who was a friend of Goodenough and visited him in Vermont in 1927 and 1928. In fact, Lovecraft described one of his visits in an issue of *Driftwind* and also modeled one of his more famous stories, "The Whisperer in Darkness" on Goodenough's house in West Brattleboro. Very scarce. *OCLC* locates no copies.
