Author's fourth novel, the story of a young Louisiana plantation owner who marries a circus clown. Benefield was born in Texas, near the border of Louisiana, but Louisiana culture seemed to dominate his sensibilities. His first novel, *The Chicken-Wagon Family*, was a major bestseller and was filmed on two occasions.
