Black Lilly

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Women's Executive Committee of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church / Freedmen's Department, [circa 1900].

Price: $225.00

Softcover. First edition. 24mo. White printed self-wrappers. 5pp. Few small sewn marks along the spine (in blank margin, where once bound with other publications), very good. A "true sketch" published by the Freedman's Department and written by Mrs. P. Ford, whose husband, a surgeon in the army in Nashville, witnessed the deathbed conversion to Christianity of a young Black woman ("Black Lilly"). Ford closes with, "Farewell, Lilly? Thou wert of lowly race, of dusky hue, but thou did'st follow in the foot-prints of Him who was despised and rejected of men… Lilly- aged 20 years. Alseep in Jesus." Unrecorded by *OCLC*, which does note several other, similar publications by the Woman's Department of Board of Foreign Missions for Freedmen.
