Dr. Algernon B. Jackson (c1878-1942) was a pioneering African-American physician, and co-founder of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the first nationally recognized African-American fraternity in the United States. He was the first superintendent of Mercy Hospital (later Mercy Douglas Hospital) in Philadelphia, until 1920 when he left to join the faculty of Howard University Medical School. The recipient of Dr. Jackson's services, Mrs. Poole, was from the historic town of Lawnside, New Jersey, which was purchased and put aside, by abolitionists, for freed and escaped slaves, in 1840. In 1926, Lawnside became the first independent, self-governing, African American community, north of the Mason-Dixon line.
