Unbound. Gelatin silver portrait photograph. Measuring 6½" x 9½" tipped into photographers printed cardstock mount measuring 9¼" x 13". Few spots of rubbing and a bit of solarization at the extremities, very good or better. Inscribed on the photograph in black ink: "For Mr. & Mrs. Charles T. Scott, from Julia Peterkin." South Carolina author Peterkin won the Pulitzer Prize for her book *Scarlet Sister Mary* (1928), which was considered controversial and even obscene by some critics, and her work, "notably 'Black April' (1927) was highly praised by radical black writers" (see Blain, *Feminist Companion to Literature in English,* p. 846). She also wrote the text of the photographic masterpiece *Roll, Jordan, Roll*.
