Brother Joe May was born in Macon, Mississippi in 1912, and is considered by some to be the greatest male soloist in the history of gospel music. The lyricist Wynona Carr was born in Cleveland in 1924. She was a member of the Wilson Jubilee Singers, J. W. Alexander's The Pilgrim Travelers, and ultimately formed her own group, The Carr Singers. She was considered a pioneer crossover artist, and recorded a number of R&B and rock and roll hits. Kenneth Morris (1917-1988), African-American arranger and composer, was co-founder (with his partner Sallie Martin) of the gospel music publishing house Martin and Morris Music Company, in 1940. At the time of his death, in 1988, Martin and Morris Publishing was the oldest continually run, and only surviving African-American gospel music publishing house in the United States.
