Corrothers was an African-American, born of mixed blood (his grandfather was part Native American and part Scotch-Irish) was raised and university educated in the mid-West, he was an amateur boxer, an author (wrote poetry and this collection of short stories - "The author thought poorly of them and regretted their publication" ), minister, and friend of James Whitcomb Riley, Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Frederick Douglass.
