Hardcover. First American edition. Translated from the French by Richard Howard. Octavo. 313pp. A fine copy in near fine dust jacket with one short edge tear, else quite fresh and bright.
Laid into the book is an Autograph Letter Signed by Jean Cau, one quarto page, "2 Avril [undated, but circa 1963]," eight lines approximately 50 words, written in French, to "Cher Ami" (possibly Richard Howard) praising the translation of his novel, Signed in full, and listing author's French address. Following the German occupation of France, Jean Cau became Jean-Paul Sartre's secretary, and he eventually became a respected reporter for *L'Express*. He won France's major literary prize, the Prix Goncourt for *The Mercy of God*.
