Autograph Letter Signed

Huntington, Long Island, New York? 1885.

Price: $250.00

Unbound. Autograph Letter Signed. One octavo sheet of engraved letterhead ("Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.), dated April 15, 1885 and written on recto only. Old folds for mailing, light abrasion down the right side of the blank verso from where it was once tipped-in to an album that just barely shows through, else fine. "Rec'd Apr 23/85" written in red ink on the verso in an unknown hand.

The noted artist and illustrator genially responds to Rev. E.F. Strickland's request for a sketch: "I will be most happy to send you a sketch for the Album you propose making: Will you kindly send me a rough idea of the shape and size the book is to be so that I may know about what to do? I am best known by my work in black and white, but I think for the purpose you intend using it, a color sketch would be more attractive (...) When would you like to have it? Very truly yours, Arthur Burdett Frost." Also present (as they came to us) is a half-tone reproduction of a photographic portrait of Frost (4" x 4¾" on 6½" x 9½" paper) with a facsimile of his greeting below. Both larger than the letter and without folds, we are unsure if they are connected.

A cordial letter by the noted artist and one of the great illustrators in the "Golden Age of American Illustration"; Frost illustrated over 90 books in his lifetime, including books by Twain, Dickens, and several of the Uncle Remus stories.
