Postcard to Edgar Williams, Brother of William Carlos Williams

Portland, Ore. and Seattle, Wash. Portland Post Card Co., 1906 / (sent 1910).

Price: $400.00

Unbound. Postcard of five men in uniform standing in front of a volcanic island captioned: "Perry Island, Bogosloff Group, Rose in Behring Sea, Spring of 1906. This island is of Volcanic Eruption." 5.5" x 3.5". Corners a bit rubbed, very good. Two postmarks in 1910, one from Ketchikan, Alaska and the other of Rome, Italy. Card addressed to Edgar J. Williams at the American Academy in Rome, where he was studying architecture after having won the Prix de Rome. The text in full: "Oct. 17, 1910. Helped survey this island on the 10th of Sept. & saw it in a violent stage of eruption in the 19th. H. N. Perlan[?]". Edgar Williams was a prominent architect, and the younger brother, by one year, of William Carlos Williams, and by most accounts was a primary inspiration to and confident of his older brother. According to WCW's, he became somewhat distanced from Edgar after visiting him in Rome in 1910, en route from his own studies in Leipzig, although he remained an important correspondent. We have been so far unable to identify Edgars correspondence in this note.
