Biography

To hyphen or not to hypen, that's the question (well, one of them anyway). Day Lewis dropped the hyphen from his name with publication of Transitional Poem in 1929 and never re-used it on a published work. Although his first son Sean re-added it for a posthumous biography in 1980, ostensibly because his father, in his final months, had said he wanted to start using it again, the Day Lewis estate denies this. The last major collection, Complete Poems (1992), appeared without a hyphen.more
