Reading syllabus for four seminars given by Hughes as visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago Laboratory School in 1949, just six weeks after the University admitted its first African-American students. Hughes list broke down each era in American history as represented by examples of both black and white poets, as well as gives a short list of anthologies of black poets, and the titles of some books by individual black poets.
