New Jersey, Rhode Island: [circa 1940s].
Unbound. A collection of 209 homemade stereo cards each with double mounted images. All of the cards are approximately 5" x 2.5", each holding near identical black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver images that are each approximately 2.5" x 2.5". A modest number of images are a bit loose, but mostly very nice and near fine. The photos contain only a few captions and no dates but seem to be from the 1940s.
A wonderful collection of almost entirely nautical scenes centered around harbors and docks in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, displaying a fine eye for composition. The few photos that provide captions are from places in Rhode Island including Point Judith and Newport, as well as Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Many of the photos show ships docked, including the SS *Normandie*, sailing, and lighthouses including Great Beds Lighthouse. They also focus on the photographer’s yacht, *Spray*, while it’s docked in a variety of places such as Newport. The photos also show garden scenes and a few images of family and friends posing around their homes and by the water. There are also photos taken from onboard various vessels with views of the water and details of the ships themselves. One photo taken on board a ship shows them coming into New York harbor with a view of the Statue of Liberty in the distance. Another photo shows the Crown Prince of Denmark while passing in a car. The Goodyear Lifeguard blimp is also seen in a photo taken looking up from a beach. A fascinating and unusually large collection of of early amateur stereo views.
