A native Bostonian, during the 1840s Brown became the most important figure in expatriate art circles in Italy. By the 1850s he had a studio in Rome, where he created his many prized landscape paintings and etchings of the Italian countryside, and where he was known as the American "Claude" [Lorrian], for his ability to create atmospheric effects and golden, light-filled skies. The "View Near Rome" is a superb example of his work from this period.
