The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (17 loose issues, 1765-1802)

[London]: [Printed by and for M. Brown ... and for W. Bent], (1765-1802).

Price: $450.00

Softcover. Magazine. 17 loose monthly issues: 1765 (December); 1783 (October, Supplement); 1791 (January-June, December); 1794 (July-August, October, December); 1797 (January, May); 1798 (May); 1802 (April). Illustrated with 18 engraved plates (one folding). Each issue is bound in later stiff paper wraps. Very good. Though lacking several plates, still a compelling collection of monthly issues of the Universal Magazine, a long-running literary journal whose contributors included Oliver Goldsmith. Among the fine engraved plates included in this run are portraits of actor John Philip Kemble, philosopher John Evelyn and poet Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, a folded plate of: "A new carriage for a Fire Engine," and a plate depicting the "new-invented scaffold for executing criminals in the Old Bailey." Also included is a long review article on the "Memoir of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin," and "General Washington's Farewell Orders to the Armies of the United States."
