The Ten Thousand Dollar Arm

Boston: Small, Maynard and Company, (1912).

Price: $450.00

Hardcover. First edition. Name stamp of a camp on front and rear endpapers, both hinges repaired, and the white spine lettering worn away, still an attractive and sound, very good copy. Author's second (of four) collection of baseball stories, aimed mostly at adolescents. Nicely Inscribed by the author to his publisher, Ralph T. Hale: "For the Hon. R.T. Hale, President of a publishing house, kind friend of all authors, sober counsellor to his gloriously potted Highness, F.O.B., and genial letter writer. Long life to you. May you find another Happy Hawkins! Yours, C.E. Van Loan." (Happy Hawkins was a successful series of children's books published by Small, Maynard.) Van Loan, also a sportswriter, convinced the editor of *The Saturday Evening Post* to print Ring Lardner's previously rejected Jack Keefe stories, resulting in the baseball classic *You Know Me, Al*. *McCue* p.114.
