Lewis was a socially conscious reporter who migrated to the West and wrote a series of Western novels and stories, in the process introducing fabled lawman "Bat" Masterson to journalism. In 1917 and 1918 four separate films were made from the Wolfville stories, at least two of them using the same cast and crew.
